A Parrot Fish can grow to 10" ? (Disambiguation)
Author Message
The startup tip informed me that a "Parrot Fish" can grow to 10 inches when mature. It's a bit inaccurate, and may cause some confusion.

Parrot Fish are saltwater fish, and the term refers to about 90 different species, nearly all of which grow to at least 10 inches. Some of them actually grow to over 4 feet in length.

There is a Parrot Cichlid, but that's not what we have in our iQuaruims either. The name Parrot Cichlid can refer to either:
Hoplarchus psittacus, a South American cichlid, up to 14 inches in length. (Most likely candidate for the name) -or-
Hypsophrys nicaraguensis, a Central American cichlid. Males can reach 10", females a bit smaller at 8" or so. (More commonly called Nicaragua Cichlid)

What we have in our virtual fish tanks are Blood Parrots. They are not, Blood Parrot Cichlids - because they are not Cichlids. Cichlids are of the family Cichlidae which is a scientific classification. These guys are not classified, because they do not occur in nature. They are a man-made hybrid. For that reason, and several others, they are a controversial fish. They are also a very beautiful fish, with vibrant orange coloring. They exhibit wonderful fish personalities and when mature often come to the top of the tank for food - but only for the person who regularly feeds them. So they actually recognize different people and can tell them apart.

I applaud iDreams for choosing this particular fish - After all, what could be more *natural* in a virtual aquarium than a man made fish, right? And though owning a Blood Parrot in any color other than their *natural* orange is out of the question for those of us who know how they got those other colors... Thanks to iDreams, we can enjoy several vibrant colors without any fishy atrocities happening.

As for the argument that it's not a "natural fish"... Well, ever seen a cow? Yeah, a bit of genetic manipulation there. Much different from the animals that wild Poodles used to herd around in prehistoric days.... -gg-

So hopefully we all now know the difference between the several fish that bear the nicknames 'Parrot' - And we know that the lovely companions we carry in our pockets and purses are Blood Parrots. Oh, and they really can get to be 10 inches long.

Keep up the good work IDreams. And thanks for all the relaxing hours of entertainment.
